1. Purpose & Functional Role

[CAM] establishes the observer’s physical vantage point, lens perspective, framing height, and continuous camera movement across the screen.


2. Standard Vocabulary & Classifications

Shot Sizes

  • EWS (Extreme Wide Shot): Environment dominates; subjects are small silhouettes or specks.
  • WS (Wide Shot): Full subject visible head-to-toe with surrounding spatial geography.
  • FS (Full Shot): Subject framed completely from head to feet.
  • MS (Medium Shot): Framed from waist up. Standard dramatic dialogue framing.
  • MCU (Medium Close-Up): Framed from chest/shoulders up. Balances emotion with posture.
  • CU (Close-Up): Framed tightly on the face/head. Maximizes micro-expressions.
  • ECU (Extreme Close-Up): Focused on specific anatomical details (eyes, twitching lips, knuckles).
  • MACRO CU (Macro Close-Up): Extreme magnification of small objects, surface textures, or mechanical details. Tighter than ECU, focused on non-anatomical subjects.
  • OTS (Over-The-Shoulder): Camera positioned behind Subject A looking past shoulder toward Subject B.
  • POV (Point-of-View): First-person perspective through a character’s eyes.
  • INS (Insert): Tight cut-in on a critical prop or mechanical interaction.

Camera Movements & Dynamics

  • LOCKOFF / STATIC: Completely still tripod framing.
  • HANDHELD: Organic breathing motion, micro-jitter, or subtle handheld drift.
  • PAN (LEFT / RIGHT): Camera body rotates horizontally on a fixed axis.
  • TILT (UP / DOWN): Camera body rotates vertically up or down.
  • PUSH-IN / PULL-OUT: Optical or physical movement straight toward or away from subject.
  • DOLLY (IN / OUT / LATERAL): Smooth wheeled camera movement through physical space.
  • TRACKING: Camera travels alongside a moving subject, matching velocity.
  • ORBIT: Camera circles around a central subject or point of interest.
  • CRANE / BOOM: Vertical elevation change (sweeping up or dropping down).

3. Camera Persistence & Named Anchors ([CAM 01])

To maintain rock-solid spatial stability across multi-shot dialogue coverage:

  • Anchor Declaration: Assign a persistent identifier on the first instance: [CAM 01] MS, eye-level, fixed side profile [CAM 02] CU, low-angle, looking up past desk
  • Subsequent Recall: In later Macro-State lines, reference only the identifier: [CAM 01] -> [ACT] Samira inhales slowly... [CAM 02] -> [ACT] Felix clenches his jaw...
  • Result: Eliminates angle drifting and holds identical lens coverage across cuts.

4. Multi-Move Chains Within a Single Line

A single unbroken Macro-State line can chain multiple camera movements: [CAM] MS, handheld -> [ACT] John steps toward table -> [CAM] Slow push-in to tight CU -> [ACT] John's knuckles whiten -> [AUDIO] Glass rattling
